Ambulance Services
Nine EMS services provide emergency medical care for all of Bayfield County. View the map of the service area online. These services include:
- Ashland – The Ashland Fire and EMS District covers 70.33 miles and 552 residences in Bayfield County. In 2022, they responded to over 70 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Barnes – The Barnes EMS District covers 124.70 miles and 1,767 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 175 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Bayfield – The Bayfield EMS District covers 81.79 miles and 1,417 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 300 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Great Divide – The Great Divide EMS District covers 357.93 miles and 2,980 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 450 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Iron River - The Iron River EMS District covers 231.33 miles and 2,689 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 550 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Mason - The Mason EMS District covers 180.92 miles and 1,371 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 200 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Red Cliff - The Red Cliff EMS District covers 52.69 miles and 835 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 515 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- South Shore - The South Shore EMS District covers 221.21 miles and 1,910 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 200 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
- Washburn - The Washburn EMS District covers 186.20 miles and 2,291 residences. In 2022, they responded to over 650 calls for help within their jurisdiction.
Seven of these nine services are staffed completely by volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who have taken the training and fulfill continuing education requirements on their own time in order to better serve their communities. Seven of these services are staffed at the EMT-Basic level trained to provide Basic Life Support or BLS skills including defibrillation and administration of oxygen, epinephrine, glucagon and nebulized albuterol. Ashland and Great Divide are staffed at the EMT-Paramedic level trained to provide Advanced Life Support or ALS skills including cardiac monitoring, additional drug therapies, and other advanced interventions along with intercept capabilities.
In 2022, EMS responded to a total 3,261 calls for help! This is a 70% increase from 2021. Bayfield County has over 180 miles of ATV trails, 600 miles of snowmobile trails, and 300 miles of CAMBA Bike Trails. EMS has responded to over 40 wildland rescues in 2022. With 2,146 miles of roadways in Bayfield County, EMS has responded to 42 serious traffic accidents. There are 16,608 citizens and 15,812 homes in Bayfield County. EMS responded to 3,046 residential EMS calls in 2022.
