The mesmerizing effect of water flows through the land from the greatest of the Great Lakes and beyond. You'll find yourself drawn to the water, wishing you could stay a little longer.
One billion years in the making, Lake Superior's majesty, tranquility, and fury are all on display in Bayfield County. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and the third largest by volume. The lake holds 3 quadrillion gallons of fresh water.
On the big lake, you'll find world-class sailing opportunities, thrilling sport fishing, power boating, kayaking, scenic cruises, full-service marinas, and more lighthouses than any other county in America. Lake Superior's shoreline is surmounted by massive sandstone cliffs formed by millennia of wave action, ice, and wind. But, there are also calm, sandy beaches that invite swimming (it's refreshing!) and leisurely rock hunting.
